I had the wine last spring with my tasting group where it was sparkling and open – on the evening this time however it seemed extremely closed.
The nose has wet wool and in the layers underneath tropical nuances spiced with dusty traces of green pepper fruit and a very weak medical tone.
The taste has primary traces of citrus, lime fruit and “sweeties”. Compared to the later vintage 2005, 2006 and the crazy 2007 it seems much more one-dimensional without the seductive complex non-linear development that has made me addicted to Halenberg. Still it has complexity and in the finish the wines projects Halenbergs monolith minerality and structure into a beauty. The finish also shows tones of pectin bitterness and weak tones of tobacco wrapping up the wine. The wine is fortunately lifted by its acidity.
Maybe it will come… I still believe….although I think the later vintage has more structure and composition.
