R & B. KNEBEL, UHLEN, ALTE REBEN, 2007

Spring time -> time for Riesling and this time an atypical one (6.4 g/L residual sugar, 14 % alcohol, slates). Knebel style is similar to Heymannn-Löwenstein and Van Volxem. Some day I would really like to have these three producers’ top wines up against each other (and then maybe repeat the same tasting after 10 years) to se which producer I prefer.

The color of the wine is dark straw yellow and indicates the first sign of the high concentration in the wine. I have had it before and was prepared for the high concentration and heaviness of the wine so I decided to serve it very cold (and in the end the wine was gaining on this decision). The nose has a lot of peach, apricots and weak tones of with flowers, honey and traces from the yeast – really delicious.
Initial the wine is rustle/sparkling on the tongue – really tasty but as the concentration takes over (as the wine get temperature in the mouth) it starts to be a little unbalanced.
In the primary fruity layer there are mainly similar tones as in the nose with peach, apricots, Mirabella and traces from elderflower. In the secondary layer it has a powerful flavor of the slate that gives the wine a smoky minerality. The wine shows the some residual sweetness.
The wine has and sharp acid that is struggling a tough fight to maintain the balance in the wine. I miss anyhow some complexity but maybe it will come with time. Beautiful glass of wine, which I think will win over time if the balance does not progress further to the heavy site.

15.5/20 (maybe a higher score if I knew how this wine would develop)
