JOHANNISHOF, RETRO DOMOS, SPÄTLESE TROCKEN, 2007

This is a special cuvee from Berg Rottland from Johannishof – unfortunately I do not know the story behind the name. I remember last summer when we visit Breuer and was sucking the information from Heinrich (Breuer) suddenly a tourist “Tivoli” train was driving around in the field – I still really struggles with my mind to forget this picture – but on the other hand it is part of the history and life in this tremendous place and it does not change the fact that we here have some of the best parcels in the entire Germany.

The wine was followed over a couple of days – initial I was really worried about the wine, the smell was really ood – with yeast, dough and distinctive putrid tones, however the nose developed like a chameleon over the night and became much more classic Rheingau having tones of citrus fruit, liquorices, white flowers and traces off resin.
The taste was nicely complex but it was still not complicated. The wine showed sharp and cutting citrus and pectin like tones in front of the mouth and liquorices, liquorices root and dusty mineral tones in the back. As with many other 2007 the entire wine was balanced by the precise acidity. I would let my remaining bottles sleep in the cellar for many years ahead I think it needs times to develop. It gets ½ point extra for the potential.
