KOEHLER-RUPERT, KALLSTADTER SAUMAGEN, AUSLESE TROCKEN R, PFALZ, 2001

This is he first times I taste this famous producer known all over world for there dry wines – so I was really excited. The estate is known for divided people into two groups 1) the excited ones and 2) the ones that does not understand the style. I have to admit I belong to the last one.

The color does not show sign of aging and immediately after smelling to the wines I understand why it divides people. For me it smells like the wine has cork (a like a tone of wet wood) but also more tropical nuances underneath– but more people around the table told that this is the style and that it will disappear with age. For me this was a bit too odd.

The wine has a very creamy, complex and dense texture – it that sense very Pfalz like. The taste has lanoline and a lot of citrus pectine bitterness in the underlying layer – combined with a enormous length and development in the finish. Luckily the wine is lifted by the juicy acidity that complete the wine – but it needs food and maybe also further development for being really interesting for me.
